about
Melbourne band Polarize share new single ‘Big Old Kid’. With liquid harmonies swirling around angular guitars, the new single continues the narrative from their last track ‘Friends Again’, but paints a less flattering picture of the friend who took things too far.
Vocalist Rudie Dood delivers nonchalant but never careless. He explains "'Big Old Kid' is a continuation of 'Friends Again' but rather than offering the prospect of staying friends, we're completely shutting it off. We recorded the bones of it in a studio in South Melbourne but had to finish it off at home in Coburg." The track was mixed by Colin Leadbetter (Leah Senior, Whitley, Girlatones) and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring).
Polarize narrate a night out or a week in with the same fluency. Synths range from arpeggiated starbursts to ghostly meanderings. The band are expressive but calm, self-aware but not self-conscious, tight but not obnoxious. Taking on a palette of influences, from the British post-punk sounds of The Clash and New Order, through to more modern takes from MGMT and The Strokes.
Their previous singles, including 'Meet Me In The Middle', Take A Step Back & Late Nights, have to lead them to establish a loyal fanbase. Winning over audiences at The Tote, The Grace, The Espy, Workers Club and Yah Yahs. As well as a headline tour through Japan last year, which took them to Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, and three sweaty shows in Tokyo.
